Romantic Valentine Breaks

Romantic Valentine Breaks

St Valentine’s Day shouldn’t be about overpriced chocolates and greetings cards, it should be about spending time with your one and only. So, book a break to escape the near constant drizzle in the UK, and score a few brownie points while you’re at it!

Camogli, Italy

Our first stop is Italy, home of St Valentine and all things romantic. While Rome is wonderful, it is a little cliché so we’re heading to the north west to Camogli, where it’s a bit cooler but full of warm and fuzzy feelings…

Valentine’s Day is huge in Camogli, it’s a weeklong love themed festival with almost every shop window and street decorated with hearts and flowers – a romantic paradise. If you’re still looking for a token of your love, take a trip to the Valentine Market in town where you’ll find handmade chocolates, cakes and sweet delights, along with trinkets, flowers and jewellery to treat your loved one.

You’ll be in Italy, so you just know the food will be incredible – with many restaurants offering competitive set menus for couples – Buon Appetito!

Average February Temp: 11 degrees

Malaga, Spain

But Malaga is just a summer beach resort? Wrong! Malaga is a beautiful Spanish city all year round and there’s much more to do than just get at tan – which sadly you won’t in February, sorry.

Take a stroll around the city’s centre and soak up the diverse culture, which is a mixture of Spanish and ancient Arabic, a nod to the city’s Moorish history. Malaga is famous as being the birthplace of Pablo Picasso and a hub of modern art, so a visit to the Picasso Museum and the other art galleries and museums is a must.

Malaga is also well known for wonderful food. Tapas is the local food of choice here, but as with most things in this area it often has a North African inspired twist – the beer is cheap too, with some Tapas bars serving a local beer for as little as 1 Euro a glass!

If after a day of exploring, you’re looking for a more sedate activity, book a session at the Hammam Al Andalus. This thermal spa is worth a visit just for the stunning architecture, but the spa has a peaceful and calming atmosphere which you could enjoy with your loved one in the steam rooms and thermal pools. If you really want to spoil yourselves, book a massage too.

Average February Temp: 18 degrees

Tenerife, Canary Islands

The Spanish owned Canary Islands are located about 100 miles off the coast of Morocco, so the weather is just a tad nicer than good old blighty, with up to 11 hours of sunshine a day – that’s a lot of vitamin D!

The flight to Tenerife, the largest of the Islands, is around 4 hours so if you can, book a long weekend at least. There’s plenty to do once you’re there, Siam Park is the most recommended attraction according to Trip Advisor and it’s not just for families and thrill seekers, there’s a whole section of the park dedicated to relaxation. Take a trip hand in hand down the lazy river, sip cocktails overlooking the white beached lagoon or treat yourselves to a glass of bubbly on a fancy canopied bed looking out over the sea – all in average temperatures that hit the low twenties in February - that’s shorts weather!

Average February Temp: 20 degrees

Reykjavik, Iceland

So, Valentine’s Day isn’t traditionally celebrated in Iceland, but it is by its very nature a place of beauty and romance. Days are short but, because of the sun’s position on the horizon, you’ll be bathed in magical golden sunlight only experienced at sunset, here in the UK. Take advantage of this beautiful light and explore Iceland’s unique landscape, a mixture of glaciers, mountains and ragged coastline which has geothermal pools and dotted all around. These pools are an attraction all of their own. The Secret Lagoon, just outside of Reykjavik has arranged tours to the breathtakingly blue lagoon, which is around 38 degrees all year round, a perfect temperature for lounging. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to see the Northern Lights from the comfort of the pool too – heaven.

Average February Temp: 3 degrees
